THE Leeds & Liverpool Canal is having it rough time with stoppages for boaters but it is being improved for walkers and cyclists.

A two miles length of towpath has reopened after being converted into a cycle track, Janet Friend reports.

SaltaireCycleTrackjpgSustrans, the cycle charity, together with Bradford Council and Canal & River Trust are behind the improvement to the towpath at Saltaire to Bingley that has been resurfaced and widened.

Accessible

The towpath is now accessible for wheelchairs and mobility scooters, as well as walkers and cyclists, and meets national standards. Saltaire to Bingley is part of route 696 on the National Cycle Network.

The image, by Sustrans, shows a before and after of the towpath, one on the left shows a towpath with potholes and the one on the right one with the new smooth surface

A 'tar spray and chip' finish will be applied in spring to make the surface similar to that laid on the towpath past Salts Mill that was upgraded in the past.
