IT WAS way back on the 1st of June last year that a lock cill was found to be in need of replacement.

Leaking badly

It was the cill on the top gates of Lock 42 on the Leicester Section in Leicester that was causing problems, it leaking so badly that a notice was issued 'to wait patiently when filling' as the cill was so damaged, Keith Gudgin reports.

But nothing was done, until now, when the leaking is so bad it is impossible to fill the lock sufficiently to open the top gates.

So the repair has had to be brought forward and the lock will be closed to navigation on Monday 4th September.

Passage two days only

In the meantime passage will be allowed on three days with assistance, starting tomorrow, Friday 25th, but alas this is fully booked. The next day, Tuesday 29th has only limited availability, with Friday 1st September  left for navigation. So only two days available.

It is stated that replacing the cill will take the normal two weeks with contractors.
