THE Erewash Canal is closed today but not by its usual lack of water.

It is told it is closed by an obstruction at Stanton Lock (65) Keith Gudgin reports.

Vandalism

But as usual in the case of the Erewash and its lack of water, vandalism is blamed for the stoppage.

A team is at present attempting to remove the obstruction so that the navigation can be reopened, and it is expected to be open later today.

LATEST: The team has been unable to clear the obstruction and further assistance is required, as there is a persistent leak on the bottom lock gates and plans are scheduled with partner group to repair this.

In the meantime, boaters can still operate the lock but it must be left empty with the top gates fully sealed and paddles closed that will prevent water draining through the bottom gates.

No mention of how vandals could cause this.
