FOR many years every lock on the Erewash Canal had anti-vandal locks on its gates.
But over the years they have become less and less effective owing to use and damage, until very few are now effective and most need replacing.
Drained pound
As once again there is a stoppage owing to a drained pound, this time between Stanton Lock and Hallam Fields Lock Keith Gudgin reports.
The canal, particularly around Ilkeston and Long Eaton, has been prone to vandals, taking pleasure in opening paddles that together with leakage soon drains a pound, stopping navigation.
Though no one is blamed this time, just a notice stating the navigation is closed.
The picture was taken at one of our cruises up the Erewash showing the pound above Long Eaton Lock where owing to useless anti-vandal locks the pound had been drained.
