Why leave the rubbish?

QUITE often the Calder & Hebble Navigation has had problems with leaks, and has had to be drained.

During this winter a pound has had to be drained again  near the Puzzle Hall Inn, and Dave Wood complaining in his local paper is asking why the rubbish at the bottom of the canal is not cleared out at the same time, remarking:

"Surely it makes sense to clear the rubbish out while the canal is empty. It's a disgusting sight when it's empty, littered with everything including the kitchen sink.

"It's a wonder when they refill there's enough water to float a boat over it, and it also makes you wonder what sort of idiots are living in Sowerby Bridge to dump the stuff in the first place."
