Iron Trunk to be renovated

LOCAL councils and various canal organisations, together with British Waterways have come together to renovate the Trunk Aqueduct, which carries the Grand Union Canal across the River Great Ouse between Wolverton and Cosgrove.

It is hoped to  complete the work in time to celebrate the aqueduct's bicentenary in January next year.

The aqueduct is of course a Scheduled Ancient Monument, and there is to be an analysis of the paint to determine the original colour it was painted.

The aqueduct, a 31 metre long cast iron trough supported by a nine metre high masonry pier, that was opened in 1811 to replace a previous brick aqueduct, which failed when the River Great Ouse flooded in February 1808.
