More Aire & Calder locks closed

DURING October of last year we were told the Aire & Calder Navigation was once again preparing for freight.

Yet over the past few days the navigation had two locks with 'structure failure', in addition to other failures during the past year.

Mechanical malfunction

Last Saturday a stoppage notice told that Woodnook Lock (pictured) had a mechanical malfunction that was preventing the lock operating and the lock was temporarily closed, though the notice told 'Navigation: Open', Keith Gudgin reports.

Then yesterday, Wednesday, Bulholme Lock on the Aire & Calder had a mechanical malfunction and the lock was not operational. Yet again the stoppage notice stated 'Navigation: Open'.

In both cases the navigation was certainly not open.

Another failure

Before this it was Knopstrot Lock on the navigation that failed.

Such lack of maintenance causing so many stoppages is hardly preparation for freight.
