New BBC's Birmingham home at canal basin

PLANS have been submitted for the BBC’s new home in Birmingham on the site of the historic Typhoo Building in Digbeth at the canal basin.

It has been announced that the BBC is to move from its present home at the Mailbox by the Worcester & Birmingham Canal to the Digbeth Branch, Roger Fox reports.

NewBBCA new 84,000 sq ft custom-built centre is planned that is scheduled to open in 2025. This image shows an artists' impression of the future canal basin.

Editorial teams

Typhoo Wharf, as it is currently known, will accommodate many editorial teams including Midlands Today, The Archers, BBC Asian Network, BBC Newsbeat and BBC Radio.  The image shows an artist's impression.

The building is expected to have a BREEAM rating of ‘outstanding' and an 'A' energy performance certificate.

Eventually the area will have more than 10 acres of land around the adjoining canal basin, it being transformed into new mixed-use accommodation and public spaces.
