Sheffield cut-off by lock wash wall failure

A WASH wall failure on Plumpers Lock (5) on Tinsley Flight has cut-off access to Sheffield Basin.

New section of pipe

The dilapidated condition of the wash wall was discovered when Canal & River Trust were attempting to fix a new section of pipe to its surface, Keith Gudgin reports.

Attempting to fix the pipe  revealed the wall's crumbling condition as it was impossible to get a solid hold for the brackets, so the navigation is now closed.

It was a new section of pipe that was being installed from the pump house up to Lock 1, which is now impossible with the wash wall in such a poor condition, that will of course have to be repaired.

Closed today

The navigation was closed today, Friday, with no access to or from Sheffield Basin, and with no intimation given as to when the wash wall will be repaired, that of course now relies on contractors.
