Well done BW Board!

THOSE that think this headline is sarcastic or the article comes with a sting in the tail will be disappointed, writes Allan Richards.

For once, BW's board has done something that meets with the approval of this particular writer. It's not much, but it does show that the board does listen and is prepared to act.

Board pay rise

At the end of November,  narrowboatworld published an article criticising the waterways minister, Huw Irranca-Davis, for awarding Board directors a pay rise. It was not so much the amount, which was under 2%, but rather that the award was inappropriate bearing in mind that the Board had approved a pay freeze for employees and that he was appointing some of BW's Board directors to a second term of office whilst BW were making employees redundant.

Directors agree

BW's Board has acted quickly with chairman, Tony Hales, saying:

"We all believe it would be wrong for us to take higher pay when there has been no general pay increase in BW this year and funding is so tight."

It is understood that the money will be donated to The Waterways Trust to help with existing projects to engage disadvantaged young people.

A sensible decision. Well done BW Board!
