Hope for Macc reopening by end of month
THE Canal & River Trust reports that there is the chance that the Macclesfield Canal will be reopened by the end of the month.
The waterway suffered a culvert failure on the 23rd March, closing the canal, but it is hoped to have it reopened by Spring Bank Holiday on the 31st May, Keith Gudgin reports.
Progressing rather slowly
Work on this repair is progressing rather slowly but we are advised that testing will be completed next week in time for the navigation to reopen in time for the holiday period.
This means the repair will have taken 10 weeks to complete, closing the main artery between the midland and northern waterways.
Also closed
This was exacerbated for many weeks as the link by the Bridgewater Canal was also closed by the landslip that closed the Trent & Mersey Canal at Anderton.
Stephen Forster's photographs show the state of the repair on the 7th of May.
