THE second death in Leigh sees a man found dead in the Leigh Branch of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal with multiple injuries.

This has resulted in a murder investigation after the police were alerted to a body in the canal in Leigh at around 7am yesterday, Thursday, Dugald Campbell reports.

Multiple injuries

The emergency services attended the scene and the body was recovered from the waterway with the man, understood to be in his 30's, found to have 'multiple injuries', police stated.

The towpath was sealed off during the day together with the roads around the canal whilst the investigation took place.

Man arrested

A 21 years old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody, the Greater Manchester Police have told with a spokesman explaining:

"We understand that incidents of this nature can be distressing for the community and I want to reassure the public that we are doing all that we can to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident and identify those responsible.

“We will have an increased police presence in the area and we encourage anyone with any concerns or worries to speak with our officers."

The earlier death in late February was of a teenager who was stabbed and a man subsequently arrested.
