Bridgewater Canal closed by unexploded shell

THE Bridgewater Canal is currently closed due to an unexploded shell at Sale.

Police are responding to an incident  where an artillery shell has been discovered in the waterway, Keith Gudgin reports.

Cordon around the area

Greater Manchester Police have set up a cordon around the area including the canal after the discovery was confirmed.

Army bomb disposal squad officers have been called and are expected to make an assessment of the device, to see what action is to be taken.

Surrounding roads have been closed and people are being urged to avoid the area.
