Lancaster canalside scheme refused

THE Communities Secretary, John Denham, has refused planning consent for a £150m mixed use development by the side of the  Lancaster Canal  in the city.

The scheme, named Lancaster Canal Corridor North, was approved by  Lancaster City Council back in October 2008, but was then called in by Hazel Blears in February 2009, Roger Fox tells us.

However, the plans have been rejected due to concerns about the evidence for removing some buildings located on the site, as well as the amount of retail floor space earmarked for the early years of the scheme.

Plans included six public spaces, new canalside restaurants and cafés and major improvements to various buildings.
