No quick fix for Trent & Mersey stoppage

IT APPEARS that the stoppage on the Trent & Mersey Canal at Northwich will not be quickly rectified.

Notice has been given that no date is forthcoming for its reopening where a collapsed culvert has closed the waterway, Keith Gudgin reports.

Required replacing

It is a wooden box culvert between bridges 184 and 185 that finally gave way closing both the waterway and towpath, that now requires replacing.

Canal & River Trust explain that 'the timber box culvert is proving more difficult that first anticipated'. There is also a gas main in its vicinity, with permission from the gas company required before any work can proceed, the Trust states.

So it seems the Trent & Mersey will be closed for some time.
