Leed & Liverpool culvert repaired

THE damaged culvert on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal has been repaired and the navigation reopened.

This is the culvert  between Bridges 64 and 65, near Arley Wood that collapsed and closed the navigation on the 19th October, but work has been completed, we are told, ahead of  schedule, thought the completion date was Thursday 14th of November—yesterday, when it was reopened, Keith Gudgin reports.

Caused confusion

The original stoppage notice—We have now brought forward the winter stoppage (originally planned for January 2020) to enable the re-lining of the canal bed over the line of the culvert—caused confusion as we took it to mean that the winter stoppage would be brought forward to the completion date of the culvert.

A pity stoppage notices are not more accurate, as even the notice telling it is open told it was ahead of schedule yet was actually on the date stated...
