Emergency telephone numbers

1. The Emergency Number for use on mobiles is 112. That enables the operator to find where you are without needed a map (the mobile cell ID shows this). Every mobile should have this in its contacts list.

The bottom line is that 112 performs identically to 999 when dialled, from any UK landline or mobile—but some older mobile handsets may not allow 112 to be dialled when the handset is PIN-locked, and there are instances of time being wasted when callers failed to dial 999 because they thought they needed 112 instead.

2. ICE. In Case of Emergency. The contacts list should contain details of who to contact if the mobile's owner should be unable to speak against the entry ICE. For example, a home phone number or next of kin's mobile number would then be available to Emergency Services by running through the disabled mobile owner's contacts list.

Waterway emergencies

For a waterway related emergency call 0800 47 999 47, which is a 24 hours number, manned for Canal & River Trust by a branch of the Ambulance Service, with its job to log details of an incident and to alert the relevant duty engineer.

What normally happens is that they page the duty engineer who then phones whoever has reported the emergency. Examples of an emergency is:
  • serious injury or a fatality
  • a fire or explosion on a boat
  • a dangerously damaged lock, bridge or tunnel
  • a boat trapped in a dangerous situation e.g. on a weir or in a lock
  • serious flooding or a breech which risks lives or property
  • serious pollution.

Non-emergency

To report a waterway related non-emergency incident during normal Canal & River Trust office hours, call Customer Services 0303 040 4040.

There should be no call queueing, and if the question can't be answered immediately, then the caller will be transferred to someone who can answer it. Customer Services has telephone numbers for every office, team and individual in the Trust.

Non-emergency police

There is now a single telephone number for contacting the various county police forces, 101 that should be used in cases where a 999 call would seem inappropriate.

There is the cost of 15p per call whether made from a mobile or land line.
