Yarn from the Yard—Too hot
Friday, 27 January 2017 10:37

AS I SIT in the office with my trusty gas heater trying valiantly to keep my ageing bones from seizing up with the cold, I want to write about Phil working on a boat with an over-heating problem! Just another of life's contradictions.

Yarns from the Yard—Black thoughts
Monday, 31 October 2016 08:11
WITH autumn on us and winter fast approaching, many narrowboat owners will turn their thoughts to those jobs that need doing during the ‘off-season'.
Yarns from the Yard—Weed-hatch woes
Saturday, 30 July 2016 10:20
HAVING been given a serious amount of nagging by various followers of this column for lack of articles, I've been cajoled to find a small ‘window', at a very busy time, to jot down a few words to entertain and hopefully enlighten.
Yarns from the Yard—Bits & Bobs
Wednesday, 22 June 2016 07:21
I THOUGHT I'd relate a couple of stories concerning boating problems that appeared, at first glance, to be major problems for the owners.
Yarns from the Yard—a new name for Phil
Thursday, 18 February 2016 16:03

WHILST working on a little Springer (known here as ‘Fugly'—because it is flippin' ugly!) on the wharf side; we watched as two 50ft(ish) narrowboats arrived and moored up on the towpath opposite.

Yarns from the Yard—Engineering problem solved!
Wednesday, 23 December 2015 08:50
READERS may be aware that I haven't produced a Yarn for some little while. Nothing to write about? Far from it, but work left too little time available unfortunately.
Yarns from the Yard—Starting and stopping
Saturday, 12 September 2015 10:30

LAST week we were asked to go and check on a boat that had been diagnosed as having a faulty stop solenoid. Nothing unusual about being asked to give a second opinion and Phil was despatched to go and do the necessary checks.

Yarns from the Yard—Silly me!
Friday, 04 September 2015 07:49

HERE at Oxley we are regularly tasked to replace old tired engines with nice shiny new ones. This is a job that Phil really enjoys and can give us some interesting mechanical problems to solve that allow our expertise to come to the fore.

Yarns from the Yard—A cautionary tale
Wednesday, 05 August 2015 09:51

THE longer I'm in the engineering industry, the more I find that customers often fail to give us all the relevant information when describing faults!

Yarns from the Yard—Unusual activity
Friday, 24 July 2015 10:19

READERS may have noticed that I've been a bit slow getting articles to narrowboatworld of late. The good news is that we've been very busy! There seems to be an increase in boating activity around this neck of the woods this year. Hopefully a good sign.

Yarns from the yard—First cruising incident
Saturday, 21 March 2015 10:45

IT WOULD seem that the ‘cruising season' has started early this year! This week we received our first call-out to a boat in difficulties on the Staffs & Worcs. Canal (Bridge 68).

Yarns from the Yard—Another cycle
Saturday, 14 March 2015 11:22

IT SEEMS that my long held belief that everything happens in cycles still holds water, as we've just experienced yet another phase of similar narrowboat engine faults here at Oxley. "Funny old world innit!"
