The Montgomery Canal Forum will be held next month, which is an 'open' meeting meaning that anyone with an interest in the restoration of the waterway is able to attend.

It will be held at Oswestry Golf Club, Queen's Head, Oswestry SY11 4JJ, a short distance from the canal, on Monday 3rd July, at 2.30pm.

The presentations will cover the success of the Montgomery Canal Triathlon which brought over 200 participants from across the country; the current Lottery-supported programme of restoration and activities along the canal; plans to reopen the canal to Llanymynech and Welshpool; the activities of volunteers who maintain the canal in the Welshpool area; horse-boating with Cracker at Canal Central, Maesbury and the latest progress of the Restore the Montgomery Canal! Appeal.

The Forum is organised by Montgomery Waterway Restoration Trust, formed in 1980 to bring together the public and voluntary organisations interested in the future of the Montgomery Canal.

Exciting times

Michael Limbrey, Chairman, Montgomery Waterway Restoration Trust exclaimed:

“These are exciting times on the Montgomery Canal, with activities and restoration works all along the canal. The support of the Heritage Lottery Fund has been a real boost to the restoration, and means some long-awaited works can get under way to extend the length that boats can use, and to ensure the protection of the canal's special ecology.

"From the experience of other canals we know the value of a reopened canal for residents and visitors, with additional jobs and canalside business opportunities, and increased property values. Our principal speaker Jason Leach led the restoration of the Droitwich Canals in Worcestershire and has first-hand experience of what was achieved there.

"The meeting will be a public opportunity to discuss anything relating to the canal and how we see the restoration going forward."
