THE Leeds & Liverpool Canal was closed at Barnoldswick on Saturday evening after a military object was discovered by the towpath.

A boater reported the object to the emergency services, with the police closing the waterway and the towpath, then searching the area for anything else.

A specialist bomb disposal unit was eventually called from Chester to make a more thorough search of the canal that was undertaken. They identified the object as a tip from either a bomb or a shell.

The search revealed nothing else, so the waterway and towpath were reopened.
