'Leaks' close Rochdale for two weeks

Published: Wednesday, 24 May 2017

STILL another closure on the Rochdale Canal, but this time serious as the waterway is leaking and will be closed for an estimated two weeks.

This is between Lock 48 and Ealees Bridge in Littleborough where the canal has been loosing water for some time at a number of places, and is getting worse, Keith Gudgin tells us.

Repair starts next month

Navigation has been stopped, for it is thought the movement of boats will exacerbate the situation, though work on repair is unable to start until next month.  Stopping boat movement should ensure the situation will not get worse, and at the same time secure the water supply.

The repairs are expected to start on Monday 5th June, with an estimated closure of the navigation for two weeks, as the canal will have to be drained for inspection and to be able to pinpoint where the water is draining away.
