Drunk but not drowned

A DRUNK man had a lucky escape yesterday (Wednesday) when he stumbled into the Leeds & Liverpool Canal in Shipley.

For unlike such as the Avon around Bath, the canal is only waist deep so he was able to stand up in the water until someone telephoned the emergency services to get him out, Alan Tilbury reports.

Yelling for help

The man had been yelling for help, but such was his state he was unable to help himself. Luckily someone living nearby heard his cries and alerted the emergency services.

Firemen hoisted him out of the water and an ambulance took him to hospital from where he was later released.

It was a spokesman for the fire crew that told the man was so far under the influence of alcohol he could not remember how he finished up in the canal.
