Oh Dear!

Oh dear! Indeed—if you wanted to take your narrowboat over the Edstone Aqueduct at Wootton Wawen on the Stratford-on-Avon Canal.

There were around 60 canoeists who were recreating a historical paddle that helped preserve the waterway way back in 1957, Roger Fox tells us.

Proved there was a need

The paddle duplicated the one back then when two canoeists paddled the stretch of waterway, then used their toll tickets that were issued to prove their was a need for the canal, that subsequently led to the cancellation of the abandonment of the southern section of the Stratford-on-Avon Canal.

This led to the restoration of the waterway that was officially re-opened in 1964 by the then Queen Mother, Queen Elizabeth, and gave the impetus for many other restorations, giving the waterways that we have today.
