Another plan for Weavers' Triangle

Published: Wednesday, 22 March 2017

IT WAS shortly before the downturn in the building industry when the 'masterplan' for the Weavers' Triangle on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal at Burnley was first instigated.

That downturn caused it to be cancelled, but now there is to be a new masterplan for the area that is roughly a triangle of buildings that were once the heart of the town's textile industry by the side of the waterway, Alan Tilbury reports.

Industrial heritage

The name Weavers' Triangle however was only brought into being in the 1970's, used as a reminder of Burnley's industrial heritage, with many of the original buildings by the canal still in existence, though some have been changed to accommodate living quarters.

The new plan is not yet in existence, but Burnley Council's Executive has recommended the appointment of experts to draw up a comprehensive blueprint for the area including the town centre. It will replace the 10 years old former masterplan.

Forward looking

It has been stated that 'the updated masterplan will be forward-looking and play an important part in developing and promoting Burnley town centre and Weavers' Triangle to potential investors, as well as helping secure external funding'.

It will however be a long process and the plan is not expected to be ready until next year. It is hoped the updated plan will be completed by early next year.
