Five more Thames crossings

THE Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has announced five new river crossings of the Thames in London, with cyclists in mind.

One of the crossing will be a combined pedestrian/cyclist bridge by Canary Wharf, and another a crossing at Docklands, Bill Ridgeway tells us.

Buses for cycles

One of the most prodigious crossings of the river will be a tunnel that will take buses specially equipped to carry cycles in addition to normal traffic, but environmentalists are against the scheme believing it would lead to more congestion and pollution.

Another crossing includes a new riverbus service between Canary Wharf and North Greenwich and another tunnel carrying the possible extension of the rail network, with all crossings complete within ten years, but no intimation of the cost or how it would be covered, only that the footbridge itself would cost £185 millions.
