THE Canal & River Trust has opened a hydroelectric plant on the overspill of Killington Reservoir, that it owns.

The scheme that was developed by Ellergreen Hydro Ltd is on a 40 years lease from the Trust, bringing it an income, Alan Tilbury tells us.

The plant was brought into action earlier this month at the reservoir, and includes two large earthen dams that hold an estimated 3,236 million litres of water when full, supplying the Lancaster Canal, via Peasey Beck.

The plant will supply power to the National Grid.
