Flow halted over Avon weir

A LARGE branch of a tree has become wedged under the radial gate of Pulteney Weir on the Avon in Bath, stopping water flowing over the weir.

This gate restricts water so that it cascades over the weir, and is used in times of flood, but the branch has wedged it open allowing water through, leaving the stream too low to reach the weir, Alan Tilbury reports.

Puzzled

This puzzled residents and visitors alike when water stopped flowing over the weir on Tuesday, and has left the river upstream of it some 4ft below normal.

Workers from the Environment Agency managed to lift the gate partly with a winch attached to a Landrover to allow a flow, but will not be removing the branch until the New Year.
