Scottish canals could be cruising waterways

TWO Scottish canals could become cruising waterways should ministers be successful in their application.

The Scottish ministers intend to make an Order under the Transport Act 1968 to reclassify the Forth & Clyde Canal and Union Canal as cruising waterways, Graham Phillips tells us.

The Transport Act 1968 classified the nationalised inland waterways either as commercial or cruising, but those two waterways fell into a third category described as ‘remainder', meaning that there is no statutory obligation to keep them in a condition suitable for navigation.

The purpose of reclassification is to secure the statutory protections given to cruising waterways.
