Lorry shuts canal bridge

A LORRY has struck a canal road bridge at Middlewich on the Trent & Mersey Canal, closing it to all but emergency services.

British Waterways has carried out a full assessment and judged the structure unsafe for traffic and pedestrians, which is causing problems as it is the main road to Nantwich.

Passage of emergency vehicles however is being allowed, and a local report states that 'pedestrian access will be maintained at all times'.
