Cyclist drowns in canal

THE police have launched an investigation into how a 55 years oldĀ  Wigan woman cycled into the Leeds & Liverpool Canal near Bolton.

It was towpath walkers who discovered the woman and her cycle in the waterway, and dragged her out, calling the emergency services. Though she was air-lifted to hospital, she was pronounced dead.

The police know who she is but would offer no further information concerning her death, but enquiries were ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding her death

The North West Air Ambulance was scrambled and she was taken within minutes to the Royal Bolton Hospital.
