Drunks rescued from Trent

TWO drunks who tried to swim across the Trent had to be rescued by police officers last Sunday.

The two had put their lives in danger by attempting to swim across the river at Brewers Wharf at Newark, but luckily two officers saw one of the men who appeared unresponsive, so they took life rings, jumped into the water, swam against the current and pulled him to safety, Alan Tilbury reveals.

Unable to get out

The other man was unable to get out of the water, clinging to bushes, so an officer threw him a life ring, then went to pull him out.

The outcome was that both men were subsequently issued with fixed penalty notices for being drunk and disorderly.

Chief Superintendent Dave Wakelin, Divisional Commander for Bassetlaw, Newark and Sherwood, stated:

"This area of the  Trent has unfortunately seen people drown and should serve as a warning to others thinking about jumping into the water, as they not only put themselves at risk but also others who try to save them."
