A MAN has been arrested at Evesham on suspicion of attempted murder after a car carrying two children was driven into the Avon in the town.

The car was carrying two young children, a girl of five and a boy of six, with the man escaping with the boy from the partly submerged car, leaving the girl inside, Alan Tilbury tells us.

Critical condition

She was rescued two hours later in a critical condition, and paramedics carried out the resuscitation of the girl who was unresponsive. Together with the boy she was airlifted to Birmingham Children's Hospital.

The man was taken to another hospital by ambulance.

Superintendent Garry Higgins, of West Mercia Police, explained:

"An investigation into the incident in now ongoing and we would also like to hear from anyone who was in the area around the river at Boat Lane."
