Still hope for Derby & Sandiacre Canal

AFTER extensive surveys over the past three years, a planning application has been submitted for the restoration of the Derby Canal.

The application follows a number of engineering and environmental surveys being undertaken together with talks with all the landowners along the route, instigated by the Derby and Sandiacre Canal Society, Alan Tilbury tells us. The photograph is of the original route from the Erewash Canal at Sandiacre.

The plans also include the provision for a marina along the route, which would connect the Erewash Canal at Sandiacre with the Trent & Mersey Canal at Swarkestone.

Members of the society believe the waterway could be completed within 10 years at the present cost of £45 millions. Funding for the survey has come from local development agencies, but no funding is in place for the actual restoration.
