Keeping cars out of the canal

Published: Monday, 25 January 2010

THERE is an attempt to slow down vehicles on Deepdale Lane by the  side of the Trent & Mersey Canal to keep them out of the waterway.

Not only are vehicles ending up in the water, but the bridge is constantly getting damaged as vehicles take the corner too fast and hit its parapet.

Derbyshire County Council will start work in February to install safety fencing and introduce speed humps on the lane  between Stenson and Barrow upon Trent.

A problem was the narrowness of the strip of land between the canal and the road, and reaching a satisfactory workable solution that meets the requirements of British Waterways.

The work will cost £33,000, with the lane being closed over the two weeks period it is in progress.
