Cold weather prompts alarms at locks

WITH a great risk in the present freezing weather of death should anyone fall into a river, safety alarms have been fitted on the Cam locks as a trial.

In the past people have fallen into the Cam at Cambridge during winter, with a death recorded, and so the Conservators of the River Cam, responsible for the river as it runs through the city, have had special alarms fitted to Baits Bite Lock and Jesus Green Lock, pictured.

Also, regular users can sign up to a scheme where they will be automatically alerted to dangerous high levels.

The river can be very dangerous when fast running, and it is hoped that all boaters, including the more vulnerable  rowers and canoeists, will join the scheme that will alert them by a message to a mobile phone.
