New Heritage Information Room

Published: Monday, 21 December 2009

AS PART of the development of Stourport Canal Basins as a major tourist destination, the temporary Heritage Information Room at the basin is to moved and recreated.

It is being moved from the old stable next to the Windlass Café/Restaurant at Stourport Canal Basins to the former ticket office at York Street, with Stourport Forward and Stourport Civic Society volunteers working on the project.

The new room will be open to visitors next year during heritage days/afternoons and at other events and activities  that will be offered throughout the year. The project is being funded by a grant provided by Advantage West Midlands and will be supplemented by funding provided by Stourport Civic Society.

Heritage Interpreter, Eliza Botham, of Ice House Consultancy, is intereested in the history of the Ticket Office, remarking:

"We're trying to piece together how the ticket office worked and what it would have looked like between about 1921 and 1948. We'd also like to hear from anyone who worked in the basins around this time because first-hand stories are often the most interesting."

The people would like to see photographs of the basins, boats and canalside works as well as examples of locally made goods: Leather goods made at the Stourport Tannery, Anglo American Enamel ware; goods made at the Baldwin works on Foundry Street; old vinegar and Worcestershire sauce bottles from Holbrook's/Sarson's vinegar works.

Anyone with a story to tell can email Eliza at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or leave a name and telephone number at the Stourport Forward office.(
