AN HYDROPOWER scheme is being planned for the locks on the Manchester Ship Canal.

This is to be installed at  Irlam Locks that it is stated will generate electricity for nearly 400 homes, Alan Tilbury reports.

IrlamLocksPlanning permission

The energy company Renewables First will construct a hydropower turbine and its accompanying turbine facilities on the eastern bank of the Manchester Ship Canal at the locks, after gaining planning approval from both Salford and Trafford councils.

Planning permission was needed from the two councils as the locks falls on the border of the two authorities.

No impact

The developers stated there would be no ‘significant impact’ on residents, ecology, fisheries, heritage or landscape, or flood risk.

No objections were made against the plans, according to a Salford town hall report.
