Huddersfield Narrow re-opens

THE silt causing the stoppage on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal has been cleared and the canal is open.

It was on the 29th of March that we were told there was too much silt stopping the gates of both locks 25E and 26E from being operated, and so the waterway was closed, but with every attempt to fix the problem.

Eventually on site

Then due to the location of the lock, access for plant and equipment was limited but this was eventually on site and the clearing of the silt progressed with an opening date of the 20th April.

It was however discovered there was more silt that anticipated, but the contractors managed to eventually clear it with the locks operable yesterday, the 23rd.

With so many locks in close proximity to each other silt is a problem as it quickly builds up, and only the complete dredging of the entire waterway will prevent even more such stoppages.
