Driver leaped into canal to escape police

THE police in Ilkeston checking a car's numberplate realised it was false and gave chase.

But the driver saw the police, stopped his car by the side of the Erewash Canal and swam across in the freezing cold in an attempt to escape, Alan Tiibury reports.

Waiting to arrest him

But the police had realised what he was doing so were at the other side waiting to arrest him as he climbed out of the canal soggy and very cold.

There were others in the car, with two more men arrested.
