The reason for 'easy' Thames locks

My Good Lady was very impressed just how strong Thames lock keepers (male and female) were until we had to work ourselves through a ‘self service’ lock, writes Iain Jones.

The reason why the Thames lock gates open/close so easily—let alone do not drift open of their own accord is that the lock gates are correctly designed and balanced—let alone well maintained.

Would make sure

If CaRT had to operate the locks on the canals under their jurisdiction—they would make sure that the gates were properly built/balanced and fitted—let alone well maintained.

What a perfect world of cruising we would have if they woke up to the real world and ceased the need for plastic ‘welcome banners’ etc.
