Repair delay to K&A swingbridge

Published: Friday, 08 September 2017

THIS time it is vandals that have delayed the repair to the Padworth Swingbridge (27) on the Kennet & Avon Canal.

Yesterday, Thursday, contractors made a temporary repair to the equipment and re-connected damaged cabling, but then discovered that the electricity meter had been vandalised beyond repair, Keith Gudgin tells us.

So the swingbridge cannot be operated, and the navigation closed until a new meter can be installed.

LATEST: It is expected that a new meter will be installed and the swingbridge reopened later today (Friday).

The summit pound on the Kennet & Avon is now up to level, with the navigation open at Crofton Flight.
However, restrictions are in place only allowing navigation between 10am and 3pm.

Quick repair

The one remaining gate paddle on a gate at Grant's Lock (30) broke yesterday, closing the navigation, but a team was quickly on site repairing the paddle, with the canal open today.
