Water shortage getting worse on the Rochdale

NOTWITHSTANDING all the rain, the summit of the Rochdale Canal is to have further restrictions.

Starting next week there will be no passage over the summit pound of the  Rochdale Canal for two days a week in an attempt to its conserve water supply, Keith Gudgin tells us.

West summit RochdaleClosed Monday and Friday

From next week the pound will be closed all day Monday and Friday of each week until further notice, with no navigation whatsoever allowed.

There are already restrictions in place at locks  34 and 44, their being chained up at 4pm every day until 8am the following morning, but this has not solved the situation, hence the further restriction.

The problem is that Canal & River Trust do not own the reservoir supplying the summit pound, and are subject to restrictions from United Utilities, that is limiting supplies.
